I have a feeling there is another bug about this but I can't find it
right now... we should do a minimal amount of checking of the supplied
mirror before continuing.

  crash due to bad custom mirror

Bug description:
  I run an ubuntu mirror.  Due to a mistake in my internal firewall
  configuration, the installation could not reach the mirror correctly.
  It was responding on tcp/80 and redirected to an auth page.  The
  installer crashed instead of gracefully failing. I submitted multiple
  crash reports while troubleshooting around 10PM EDT on Jun13/2020.
