Title:
Choice "Install Ubuntu" or "Try Ubuntu" is not adapted to new users
Status in ubiquity package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Binary package hint: ubiquity
For 10.10, we focused on making Ubiquity simple for new users.
So why do we still ask them to choose between "Try Ubuntu" and
"Install Ubuntu" ? I showed the welcome screen to 3 people who don't
know Ubuntu (they just used my computer a little), and they were
confused about the choice.
Of course new users want to TRY ubuntu before installing it !
Let's remove this "Install Ubuntu" button, and just make a Welcome screen that explains that they will first arrive on a Ubuntu-session that will not change anything on the computer, unless they click on the "Install Ubuntu" icon located on the Desktop.
This would have many advantages :
- simplicity
- the new user will not be confused by this horrible question "Test or Install ?" at the Welcoming screen
- the new user will automatically check that its hardware is recognized
- the new user can connect to internet, so that it will facilitate further installation steps (with internet location, Ubiquity can can guess time zone, update packages ...)
And for those who already know that their hardware is ok (this means
"not new users"), they will probably know that there is an option to
install directly from the classical old black&white welcome screen.
Hope this helps making Ubuntu more accessible to new users.
See attached mockup.
