Title:
Crash Report from kernel update lost after internet connection dropped
Status in apport package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Kernel update gave an error after reset.
Apport began compiling a crash report.
My internet connection dropped while Apport was compiling the report.
Apport then asked me to approve the report filing.
I told it to go ahead.
Apport failed because there wasn't an internet connection. It went away and didn't come back. I now cannot be sure that there has not been a serious problem during the kernel update, and that this has not been reported. An important error report may have been lost forever. Even if it is an unimportant error report, my system has been wasting my time.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a more detailed description of what happened:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Software updater ignored message to install
Had 10 updates. I said entered password and pressed return for <install>. It went away. It din't install. It came back and said there were now 20 updates. I entered password and pressed return for <install>. I wondered if I had entered the last char of the passwd incorrectly. It was one of those moments where you rattle it out and it could have gone 50/50 on the last char. SU then crashed.
Error:
"
The task cannot be monitored or controlled.
The connection to the daemon was lost. The background daemon probably crashed.
<settings><OK>"
I opened the settings. But this wasn't much use to me in this
situation. I was none the wiser.
Unusual context: my computer has not been reset for a couple or three
days.
Reset computer.
It said 23 updates available. I told it to install.
(There was here a counterveilling circumstance. My internet connection wasn't on, so SU bailed. So I told it to install again.)
They installed.
But it gave an error at the end: "Package operation failed: the installation or removal of a software package failed."
Did not say what package failed or why.
Pressed <OK>
On restart Apport reported a crash. It said there had been a problem
updating the kernel image. I had a brief look at the report as I was
filing it. It was concerned with the package Alsa. My internet
connection had closed while the crash report was being compiled. I did
not see this when I pressed the button file the report. Apport said it
could not file a report because there wasn't a connection. It went
away and did not come back.
