Title:
installer should provide a more informitive message when no disks
  found

Status in ubiquity package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Problem: I tried to install Jaunty on a new machine. The power cable
had fallen out of the hard drive during shipment. The installer
silently fails, hiding the problem, and making the installer appear
responsible. (Note: this is not an obscure scenario, so it should have
  more friendly behavior.)

  Repro steps:
1- Disconnect power from hard drive.
2- Install Jaunty from a CD.
3- It gets all the way to the partitioning step. All buttons are grayed out except "Cancel". There is no indication what the problem may be, so it seems that the installer is broken.

Expected behavior: Display a helpful message like "No devices are
found to partition. Is your hard drive properly connected?"

Note: If I run gparted directly, it gives the semi-helpful message "no
devices found" on the status bar. The Jaunty installer does not report
  any such message.
