Title:
When I ran "update-grub" after editing the grub.conf file to have
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset" written in it, the screen turned to
black and displayed the running taks with the green "OK" letters next
  to them

Status in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
When I ran "sudo update-grub" after changing the line in grub.conf to
be "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset", the screen turned to black and the
windows would not appear. I was forced to open a tty session and
  reboot.

  Expected Results:
The command runs but the screen does not turn black until I initiate a shutdown/reboot

  Actual Results:
The screen turns black and the startup tasks and status appear over a black background, as it would when I push the up key when ubuntu starts up.

This issue occurred at around 3:47 PM, EDT, on November 29, 2019.
