One other thing that I've noticed is that the mouse pointer gets really
laggy and sort of spastic when it passes over an open window. It's when
it's being laggy that it seems to crash and disappear.

Title:
Mouse no longer functions reliably after latest update

Status in ubuntu-release-upgrader package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
After installing the latest update, my mouse started misbehaving. It
stops working after a short period of time. I unplug the usb plug and
plug back in and the mouse will sometimes work for a few minutes,
sometimes not at all. I both tried the mouse on a different computer
where it worked and used a different mouse on the Ubuntu machine where
  the same issue re-occured.

  Thank you,
