Hi Brian,

Did so:

bash: /etc/profile.d/vte.sh: No such file or directory
george at Leysin:~$ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
[sudo] password for george:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
ubuntu-desktop is already the newest version (1.417.5).
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
george at Leysin:~$ ^C
george at Leysin:~$

What I do find strange is that last evening I upgraded an older (2005)
PC which had xubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 with no real difficulty. Yes, it
never did stop searching for files to remove (in preparation for Clean
UP), so this morning I just turned it off and rebooted. Then I ran the
three apt commands, update, upgrade, and autoremove. That PC now runs
xubuntu 20.04 just fine.

Title:
System upgrade from Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 stops part-way through.

Status in ubuntu-release-upgrader package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  "Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the
  command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. If
you want to investigate this yourself the log files in '/var/log/dist-
upgrade' will contain details about the upgrade. Specifically, look at
  'main.log' and 'apt.log'."

I did uncheck my two ppa in my upgrade sources but still get the above
  error message.
