currently happening to me on Ubuntu 20.10. Never had any issues
installing linux systems until I installed Ubuntu 20.10

"executing grub install /dev/sda failed this is a fatal error"

also posted a similar report https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source

boot-repair did nothing. tried to dual boot with windows 10 in case
their installer would fix it. no luck.
