Are you booting in BIOS mode? Can you boot in UEFI mode? Did this work
in an older release?

  grub does not initialize display

Bug description:
  grub does not initialize display. It loads drivers, but wont display
  any menue. You can only blindly try to find the entry to boot if
  something goes wrong with the default one. This is on a variety of
  machines connected to 4k displays.
