Title:
Ubuntu installer overwrote the wrong hard drive bootloader

Status in ubiquity package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I had ubuntu installed on my main hard drive, sda, and wanted to make
an external hard drive have its own ubuntu installation that was
  bootable.

I plugged it in, and used the live USB to install to it. (20.04.4 LTS
  ubuntu desktop)

In ubiquity 20.04.15.17, on the partition manager, I selected
something else, and made the / partition on the external hard drive
sdb (different make and capacity so it was definitely the right hard
drive). I also added a swap partition to it too.

I changed the 'device for boot loader installation' to sdb also and
  finished installation.

After installing, the external hard drive was not bootable. I
unplugged it, and tried to boot to my normal ubuntu desktop, which was
  also now broken.
