Further to comment #2 I'm belatedly closing the 100 Papercuts task as
fixed.

Title:
[version bump] Please include LVM2 version > 2.02.106

Status in lvm2 package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
LVM2 introduced LVM Caching with 2.02.106 to allow backend cache (SSD)
  for other block storage (HDD).

The packages are built in Debian Sid, and it would be good to also
  include this package in Ubuntu.

  https://packages.debian.org/sid/lvm2
  http://metadata.ftp-master.debian.org/changelogs//main/l/lvm2/lvm2_2.02.109-1_changelog

RHEL7 has this feature as a tech preview:
  https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/7/html/7.0_Release_Notes/chap-Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux-7.0_Release_Notes-Storage.html

Though Trusty's kernel version is too old to support LVM Cache,
Utopic's 3.16 kernel should work out of the box. Support was added in
  3.14.

Benefit over bcache and dm-cache is that the caching LV can be added
and removed without the need for reformatting the FS.
