I shut down, then reinstalled from usb.  All up and running ok. I didn't
want to go through the MS Windows setup (which I find particularly
irksome, cumbersome and intrusive) which is probably why the Windows
cache contained the metadata.

I only sent the failure through in case there were any bugs in the
installer that may have needed patching.
