Thank you for your time and attention. Sorry for the delayed reply.

I've now successfully installed Ubuntu-MATE on a Sandisk Extreme 
external SSD-drive. Resolved some hiccups with the boot-process and now 
it's working great.

  Installation error report - UbuntuMATE on usb

Status in ubiquity package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Installed Ubuntu-MATE 20.04.4 (Focal Fossa) 64-bit on an 8GB usb-drive
  (from a 4GB live-usb). Error report stated some installation files
  couldn't be deleted after installation (don't remember which ones).
  Was right near the end of installation, but received notification that
  the installation had finalized.
