Public bug reported:
* System was a fully updated Kubuntu 20.04
* System is now Kubuntu 22.04
* I'm unsure which version of the ubuntu release upgrader it was but would assume that it was 1:20.04.38 since the system was fully up to date.
I attempted to upgrade from 20.04 to 22.04 (now that the point release
is available) by manually invoking do-release-upgrade which crashed part
way through the upgrade.
I've attached the log from my shell for the entire process up until it
crashed. Unfortunately it was a considerable way into the upgrade when
it happened so it left my system in an unusable state.
There does not appear to be a way to restart/continue a failed do-
release-upgrade, and since I needed this system working again I
attempted to use dpkg and apt to complete the upgrade. Unfortunately I
didn't realise that it had completely messed up the kernel so that it
appeared to be missing all modules and would not even start to boot
properly. It had also not completed the transition to the newer KDE and
so was missing quite a few bits. Using a live USB and the boot-repair
tool I was able to get the system booting again, have a working desktop
and am now fixing the remaining minor issues.
I'll provide more information if I can, although clearly it will not be
easy to recreate the conditions that led to the crash, especially now
that my system is upgraded.
