I have also been hitting this issue frequently over the past few weeks,

ERROR: unable to update: HTTP code 503 while fetching
http://ddebs.ubuntu.com/dists/focal/Release

and

ERROR: unable to update: HTTP code 503 while fetching
http://ddebs.ubuntu.com/dists/focal-updates/Release.gpg

And similar errors while fetching packages to mirror the repository,
these errors popped up midway through a sync.
