I tried the install again with a couple different options and it succeeded.
One difference is that I mounted the /home directory on the same bcache
device partition with the main root file system, whereas in the previous
failing install I had mounted /home on a separate bcache device partition.
Another difference was that I used the a separate small partition on the
SSD for the /boot directory while EFI ESP was mounted on the existing ESP
on the primary SATA HD, whereas on the previous filling installation
attempt I had mounted /boot on the main ESP partition of the HD.
It would be helpful to know which of these changes was key to making the
install fail or work. More guidance/rules/enforcement on what partition
choices in the “do-something-else’ partitioning part of the install won’t
work would be quite helpful.
After the installation completed I chrooted to the new installation root
and installed bcache-tools from the Ubuntu repository while running in the
.iso installer environment. It would be cool if the installer would have
bcache-tools in the .iso and would install bcache-tools automatically with
the Ubuntu install (it’s tiny) to obviate the chroot steps. The ultimate
installer feature improvement would be to fully automate creating bcache
devices when the user elects it.
I did this following a couple posts I found on how to install ubuntu on a
bcache device. I manually installed bcache-tools on the ‘Try Ubuntu’ .iso
environment and then used make-bcache commands to create the bcache devices
before running the installer.
After booting up Xubuntu after the install I tried to remount the /home
tree on the 2nd bcache device and managed to get in a state where I could
not logon. I think I can fix this myself using posts on this problem.
I am looking forward to much improved performance on my PC with the small
256 GB SSD bcaching my pair of 2 TD hard drives while running Windows apps
in a Windows 10 virtual machine using VirtualBox.
Thanks
Alfy
