With the latest systemd using --reuse flag:

bsp at lunar:~$ lxc launch ubuntu-daily:mantic systemd-lxc
Creating systemd-lxc
Starting systemd-lxc                          
bsp at lunar:~$ export IMAGE=autopkgtest
bsp at lunar:~$ lxc publish systemd-lxc --force --reuse --alias $IMAGE
Instance published with fingerprint: 52e8c329c5a196697b51b2402e88ed3b3b3174351a45edd92d3d00b20e569604
bsp at lunar:~$ lxc publish systemd-lxc --force --reuse --alias $IMAGE
Instance published with fingerprint: a3c6f88ecba0e9a256399b0e3077646af76d88030ef40139ecb76091c2e97e91
bsp at lunar:~$ 

all works fine

  autopkgtest failure in tests-in-lxd

  Invalid

Bug description:
  test-in-lxd fail with the error

  4259s Error: Aliases already exists: autopkgtest/ubuntu/mantic/amd64

  Please see the log[1].

  This happens when the image with the same name is already present in
  the runner machine.
