Okay I think I found out. The image needs a sudo apt-get update; sudo
apt-get full-upgrade before using it. On a second try, the installer
went smoothly as intended.

Bug description:
  Installation commenced after starting from USB desktop image (and some
  tinkering to get it to boot on this, ofc) however the rootfs is the
  same as from the desktop image for raspberry pi. Then it only says "it
  crashed" and this is the bug report.
