Thank you for writing your question. By argument protection do you mean
RSYNC_PROTECT_ARGS? If so, we follow what upstream & debian does. You
can learn about this environment variable in `man rsync`.
Is a certain command not working properly for you? If so having that
command would be helpful.

Does rsync 3.1.3-8ubuntu0.6 in focal do use the old or new "argument
protection" by default?
I ask because to my knowledge ubuntu-rsync do not follow upstream-
rsync in all aspects.
