Public bug reported:

The ubuntu 20.04.5 installer crashed in the middle of reinstalling the
same version to an existing 20.04.5 version. I'm sorry, I'm not able to
attach any screen shot or other system log info because the crash
disabled all functionality of ubuntu except for this bug reporter that
popped up.

The crash happened just after I selected the "something else" option in
the dialog prompts. The installer started "copying" files according to
the on screen messages (kernel libraries presumably) then abruptly
crashed. I chose the "something else" option because 1) comments in the
askubuntu.com forum said this was successful for others and 2) I wish
to preserve my existing /home files and programs/settings. The other
two options selectable warned that they both would erase all files and
programs. There was no other option to try to preserve my files. This
seems different from older versions of Ubuntu/installer where I've seen
screen shots of the installer first option offering to save all existing
programs and /home files.

I was reinstalling 20.04.5 because my existing 20.04.5 system was 1) running very slowly and 2) the monitor was in low resolution mode and it seems the AMDGPU driver was not installed/running. This happened after I converted the nvme drive containing the / and /home partitions from mbr/bios to gpt/uefi setup and then ran the boot-repair command to install grub. The system booted successfully and I could access all /home files and programs, but system ran at low graphics resolution as noted. This is where I tried to reinstall Ubuntu thinking there are some missing graphics drivers and possibly other missing kernel files. This is all part of a bigger activity of me moving my existing hard drives containing ubuntu to a new motherboard/cpu/graphics card. I moved it and it worked but was having the noted graphics issues hence wanted to reinstall ubuntu. I would really love to have a easier/smoother method to migrate to the new hardware and preserve my programs and files. I had also posted to askubuntu.com for help on this activity but have not received a complete answer/solution yet.

I can provide more info if you email to me to request.

Thanks, Clarence
