I wrote a kinetic (RC) ISO to thumb-drive
-rw------- 1 guiverc guiverc 3.8G Oct 18 23:58 kinetic-desktop-amd64.iso
booted the dc7700; `sudo apt update` then checked aptitude, figlet,
fortune, cowsay & numerous other packages were installed..
booted kinetic ISO & performed same install there.. I used Ctrl+Alt+T
to open terminal & pinged ISP using name & got replies, so internet was
available during install.
on reboot; the packages were NOT installed either..
As I do this often using flavors (which have UNIVERSE enabled), I
suspect its the universe that Ubuntu Desktop does not use..
Either way; I do ***NOT*** see a regression from Kinetic with this
install type.

Title:
Ubuntu Desktop install (ubiquity) regression? restore packages
Status in ubiquity package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
Repair installation type of install to
- hp dc7700 (c2d-e6320, 8gb amd/ati rv610/radeon hd2400 pro/xt)
Manual Partitioning (something else); select existing partition
WITHOUT FORMAT & install.
Filesystem details
- install created by a Lubuntu QA-test install; one partition with no ESP (old 2005 box where calamares doesn't create ESP)
- prior install to partition was Ubuntu Desktop (new Desktop Installer), again NO FORMAT with numerous packages added on prior install including figlet, fortune, cowsay, aptitude, numerous older Ubuntu release wallpapers, mousepad etc...
- command history will include my prior exploration (`df -h`, `cat /var/log/installer/mediainfo` etc or post-install checks, multiple install checks are expected)
- this install type REQUIRES INTERNET to be available during install, otherwise no package re-install can occur!
** Expected Outcome
- my files will not be touched
- packages added will get re-installed (providing internet is available)
** Actual Outcome
- my files are untouched (present in $HOME, both files & contents, command history present etc)
- 'manually installed' packages did not get re-installed???
** Operator error
- I forgot to check internet was available during install; could this
be why.
** Two attempts
After first attempt; I `sudo apt update` & noted UNIVERSE was enabled
and good, then installed cowsay fortune figlet aptitude audacious
mousepad & others, then to confirm ran aptitude & searched for prior
Ubuntu Desktop wallpapers & installed all prior releases..
Then re-tried the install; again same result.. All my files survived
alas no packages re-installed.
Was this feature removed? I could re-try kinetic to ensure it's
present.. as last 6+ months I'm mainly doing these type installs on
flavors and not Ubuntu Desktop (esp. Lubuntu in QA; Xubuntu on my own
boxes though that's usually only LTS)
