As a user, encountering an issue where "grub-install" defaults to
"/dev/mmcblk0" instead of "/dev/sda" can indeed cause installation
failures on laptops that have an SD card. The preference for
"/dev/mmcblk0" over "/dev/sda" can lead to incorrect bootloader
installation and system booting issues.
To address this problem, you can try the following steps:

Disconnect the SD card: Before running the installation process, try
removing the SD card from the laptop

Title:
grub-install defaults to /dev/mmcblk0
Status in grub-installer package in Ubuntu:
Triaged
Bug description:
grub-install defaults to /dev/mmcblk0 over /dev/sda. This causes the
installation to fail on laptops that have an sd card. It should
prefer /dev/sda, even if there is a sd card present.
