I did `sudo apt reinstall ubuntu-desktop` and then I was able to proceed
with the upgrade.

Bug description:
  Upgrading to 23.10 fails because of an "unresolvable problem". I am
  cautioned to purge any PPA packages that I have installed. I have no
  such packages, only repositories. In /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log,
  the packages gnome-remote-desktop and gnome-shell are being reported
  as "broken".
