Many thanks. In the end I deleted all the scripts from /etc/grub.d ,
uninstalled all the grub packages with --purge and reinstalled. This
recreated the scripts and I was then able to add the required bits to boot
my old laptop.

It should be noted that I think this broke the Ubuntu upgrade. At the end
of the upgrade when it attempts to install the bootloader it failed to
install anything on sda . Instead it found the install of grml-rescueboot
and installed a bootloader on sdd! This then started my attempts to repair
the system and this bug report.

Title:
grub-mkconfig fails version_find_latest command not found

Status in grub2 package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
grub-mkconfig fails "version_find_latest command not found".
Apparently version_find_latest has been retired. There is a workaround
patch, which needs to be applied by hand with the Ubuntu scrips. Seems
to also affect booting with the last configuration, making unattended
  reboot impossible.
