This seems like the firmware refusing to write the EFI boot entry and that error "bubbling up" from the firmware API via the kernel driver.

I am not sure if grub can do much here

  an existing Windows 10 partition and choose Ubuntu or Win at start-up.
  Partition size set to 250GB for Win and 250GB for Ubuntu.
