I managed to get it to build on i386 by turning pytest coverage off and not installing python3-pytest-cov for i386 (as python3-coverage is not published for i386 since Focal.
That fixes the FTBFS, but would that be desirable here?

  FTBFS, as python3-coverage, a dependency of python3-pytest-cov, is not

  E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
  apt-get failed.
