I would add this to /etc/default/grub:

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="plymouth.use-simpledrm"

or try removing the "splash" parameter in the same file to disable
graphical boot completely. Then run:

  sudo update-grub

and reboot.

You can also edit kernel command line options in the grub menu if you
tap Escape early enough in the boot process
