Thank you for your hug report, but without the directory files attached
there is nothing we can do here. This is an error we have never seen
before as far as I am aware, as such it seems highly likely that this is
a local configuration issue, are you running a custom kernel or replaced
key packages with PPA versions?

Title:
System consistently destroyed when upgrading 23.10 to 24.04
Status in ubuntu-release-upgrader package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Lenovo Thinkpad P14s (AMD Ryzen 7) 64GB RAM, 4TB SSD
Installed 23.10 eleven months ago because no other Ubuntu distro would run on this product. I would like to upgrade to 24.04.1. I've attempted the upgrade half a dozen times (both 24.04 and 24.04.1), but it always fails and leaves the system in an unusable state. The fail screen asks me to attach the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ to the bug report, but with the system unusable, it is difficult to recover them. If desired, I will boot a rescue system to get them before restoring my (fortunately) backed-up disk image.
My most recent attempt was done from a virtual console, and I believe
scroll-back on these was removed from the kernel recently. Thus, I
have only one page of info, which I photographed, and then ran OCR on
from the restored system. Output follows:
dpkg-deb --control subprocess returned error exit status 2
dpkg-deb: error: tar subprocess was killed by signal (Segmentation fault)
