Hi Benjamin,
well I thought about simplifying copy_libgcc too.
But it already has the signature for libdir/library and I didn't wanted to remove it,
and according to the SRU process I think that changing just the way it is called is less impact-full than modifying the function itself (body and signature).
On top this modification would be under debian/* (debian/initramfs/hooks/multipath) rather than in the upstream code (/usr/share/initramfs-tools/hook-functions).
And there are further cases under /usr/share/initramfs-tools/* where paths are constructed similarly (and I think it's not too complicated ;-) ).
And since copy_libgcc is in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hook-functions of initramfs-tools-core hence potentially widely used, I wanted to be esp. careful about any modification, since it might "somehow somewhere" be used in a way I'm not aware of and that I cannot oversee right now.
Thought about opening a Debian bug on that as well, since the situation
is the same (at least in trixie and sid).

Bug description:
I recently did an 24.10 install and was surprised that the system
hangs during the post-install reboot.
Investigation showed that this happens if the installer applies
updates, which is done by default, if there is proper network
connectivity and archive access.
In case of an install where I disabled the network, hence an offline
install was done, the installation incl. post-install reboot was
successful.
So I took such a successfully installed system (where no updates were applied) and noticed that currently the available updates are:
$ apt list --upgradable

So seemed to be kernel related, hence tried to update the kernel manually:

Hence I tried to ran update-initramfs on the release kernel 6.11.0-8-8
and it happened there as well:

So it's a initramfs-tools (mkinitramfs) issue rather than a kernel issue,
somewhere in copy_libgcc() (or before).
Seems to be a small issue, but is causing a big impact, since it leads
to a broken default installation.
