A bug I filed has been marked as a duplicate of this one. There seems to
be a fair amount of effort here to dissect the various log files in
'/var/log/dist-upgrade' ('main.log', 'apt.log').

main.log is 1331 lines long. Roughly 2/3rds follow a "Searching for
replacement for ....Failed to find a replacement for...." pattern

apt.log is considerable larger (4205 lines). The tail end of the file is
full of entries describing "Broken [package]"

Any help or suggestions welcome

Bug description:
  The error popping up during the upgrade process says Could not
  calculate the upgrade. An unresolvable problem occurred while
  calculating the upgrade. If none of this applies, then please report
  this bug using the command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core'
  in a terminal. If you want to investigate this yourself the log files
  in '/var/log/dist-upgrade' will contain details about the upgrade.
  Specifically, look at 'main.log' and 'apt.log'.
