A patch for that will be welcome.

As of Ubuntu 24.10 (oracular), you can use 3cpio to list/extract
initrds. It will print following message when the needed binary is not
found:

```
$ 3cpio -t /boot/initrd.img > /dev/null
3cpio: Error: Failed to list content of '/boot/initrd.img': Program 'lz4' not found in PATH.
```

Would you consider that enough as well?
