Title:
plymouth: shutdown console messages using bold font render with
  rectangle font-not-available placeholder character

Status in plymouth package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
this is probably a duplicate of #2056526 but that report is
  specifically scoped to live sessions.

This bug is for a 25.04 laptop install (a 24.10 upgrade). It has been
  present since beta.

  The details are the same:

"Plymouth's hidden console contains squares instead of bold text on
  live session shutdown.

You can see it by pressing Escape instead of Enter.

It seems somewhat related to the fix for bug 1942987, which only
preloads non-bold text for the live session shutdown splash."

I have seen this behaviour in my workstation 24.04 install, and came to the conclusion that it may be a race condition. Adding a delay seemed to make is happen less often, but in the end I think it was a red herring, because even with large delays it will still happen.

In any case, on my laptop the problem is reproducible every time. It
is only affecting bold text. I have not customised plymouth in any
  way.

However, in two different VM installs of 25.04, it is not visible.
