Public bug reported:
Unsure if this should be asked as a support question, but I do not know
how to add logs and debug information to that type of post.
Over the past week, I successfully upgraded 4 Ubuntu computers on 22.04
to 24.04 without much issue. On this computer, I have run into several
issues using do-release-upgrade.
Unlike the other computers, this machine was installed from the 22.04
server iso since I expected to run it as a server. I later installed
some desktop packages, making it similar to the desktop version I use on
the other machines.
One of the issues was as described here:
The package 'update-manager' is marked for removal but it is in the removal deny list.
I had uninstalled `update-manager` with `sudo apt remove update-manager`
which caused subsequent issues, namely with holding broken packages.
Something like this:
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/cant-upgrade-from-22-04-to-24-04-complains-about-held-broken-packages/55026/24
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling ubuntu-desktop and other similar meta pkgs, but to no avail.
I tried removing ubuntu-desktop^, but that unfortunately removed a significant number of packages I did not want removed, so I restored the entire machine from a backup.
After restoring the backup from a relatively clean slate, I took the following steps:
update, upgrade, snap-refresh, dist-upgrade (removed some cuda packages and nvidia drivers)

Also tried doing the suggestion at
`https://askubuntu.com/questions/1525143/upgrading-
from-20-04-to-22-04-fails`.
`sudo apt install --reinstall snapd`
However, that didn't change anything.
I also took a look at the sources where I assume ppa packages are.
After looking through the sources, I was unsure if any of them were
causing the problem. I just assumed not and did not do anything to try
to change them. Maybe the problem could be here?
I can post post the contents of the /etc/apt/source.list.d files upon
request.

Also tried doing the suggestion at
`https://askubuntu.com/questions/1525143/upgrading-
from-20-04-to-22-04-fails`.
`sudo apt install --reinstall snapd`
However, that didn't change anything.
-
I also took a look at the sources where I assume ppa packages are.
After looking through the sources, I was unsure if any of them were
causing the problem. I just assumed not and did not do anything to try
to change them. Maybe the problem could be here?
I can post post the contents of the /etc/apt/source.list.d files upon
request.

Title:
do-release-upgrade 22.04 to 24.04 failed
Status in ubuntu-release-upgrader package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
Unsure if this should be asked as a support question, but I do not
know how to add logs and debug information to that type of post.
Over the past week, I successfully upgraded 4 Ubuntu computers on
22.04 to 24.04 without much issue. On this computer, I have run into
several issues using do-release-upgrade.
Unlike the other computers, this machine was installed from the 22.04
server iso since I expected to run it as a server. I later installed
some desktop packages, making it similar to the desktop version I use
on the other machines.
One of the issues was as described here:
The package 'update-manager' is marked for removal but it is in the removal deny list.
I had uninstalled `update-manager` with `sudo apt remove update-
manager` which caused subsequent issues, namely with holding broken
packages.
