I do not have a strong opinion on this and even if I would, I do not
have a strong influence on this matter, but I wanted decision makers to
be aware of at least more than one options before making a decision.

Gentoo also uses dracut, both with systemd and with OpenRC. The OpenRC
dracut integration is being proposed to be upstreamed from Gentoo, so
that it can be shared with Debian based distros - see
https://github.com/dracut-ng/dracut-ng/pull/1226 - but if update-
initramfs is directly using dracut than this extra integration upstream
dracut will not be used.

One advantage of such approach is better UKI (Unified kernel image)
support and potentially improved future compatibility.

Title:
Add dracut support for update-initramfs command

Status in dracut package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
As requested by bdrung here: https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/spec-
  switch-to-dracut/54776/7?u=mhalano, I'm opening this ticket.

The idea is to add support for dracut in the `update-initramfs`
command. The idea is to use the same easy syntax with dracut as we use
  to use with initramfs-tools.

I don't know for sure what is the optimal approach to solve this,
though, maybe add support to the command creating a more agnostic
tool, or create a wrapper just for dracut.
