Title:
Ubuntu Installation Process Truncates Hostname at Period

Status in ubiquity package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
The Ubuntu 16.04 desktop installation accepts a hostname containing
periods when it prompts the user. If a user provides a hostname
containing a period during installation, after installation is
complete the hostname is observed to be truncated to the substring
before the first period in the hostname provided by the user. Either
the installer should not accept a hostname containing periods, or such
  hostnames should be set correctly.
