Thanks for your response, Ravi. Which part of the Ubuntu ecosystem is
your speciality? Cryptsetup or display? Are the display controls that
I mentioned part of xfce or Ubuntu?

I am holiday at the moment and don't have the facilities to download and
install another operating system. I do have Asmi and Xubuntu available
on my laptop, so I could do some simpler tests.

Alternatively, I see that cryptsetup is now part of systemd, although
web searches only lead to the older way of using it. How am I supposed
to mount my encrypted partition in the new way?

Title:
  crypttab breaks display controls

Status in cryptsetup package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Following a clean installation of XUbuntu 24-04 (updated) and then
  "apt update" and "apt upgrade"

I did "apt install cryptsetup" and hand editted /etc/crypttab and
/etc/fstab to point to a pre-existing encrypted partition that had
been created using the same methods. Then I re-booted.

During boot, there is a brown text box, but it seems the keyboard is
  not recognised.

So instead I use the recovery mode on both screens ("advanced options"
and "recovery mode") and type the password amongst the boot log text.
Then login proceeds correctly, with the encrypted partition mounted
  and readable.

But in addition to this, the Fn-F8/F9 keys, which without cryptsetup
controlled the screen brightness, no longer do that.

Moreover, in Settings/Display, the laptop screen, which had been
called "laptop" without cryptsetup, is now called "None".

Also, an external LCD monitor connected by an HDMI cable, which had
been recognised without cryptsetup, is no longer recognised.
