Subiquity's builtin password generation mechanism uses the [A-Za-z0-9]
range. However, it is only used if nothing else has set a password yet.

I assume that since 24.04.2: the password is already set by another
software component (maybe cloud-init?).

We need to investigate and see if any character in the "new" range could
cause problems, such as what Frank ran into.

Title:
Got temp. installer password with strange character

Status in Ubuntu on IBM z Systems:
  New
Status in subiquity package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I noticed that the generation of the temporary subiquity server installer password changed (roughly between noble .1 and .2).
Until .1 it was with only characters in the [A-Za-z0-9] set,
then much more characters became possible.

That hasn't been a technical issue per-se so far (other than more difficult to type),
until I started to try the 24.04 daily (in prep. for .3 testing)
and when the temp password was this:
  pv6xO0D8'sJ¨A.|(oHSz

The 12th character is pretty unusual and difficult to type and even
copy&paste of the password (what I almost do all the time anyway) did
  not work.

I have to admit that this could have been caused due to the fact that I did the installation on s390x, where the default console ("Operating systems Messages") is not very rich, and where maybe a mapping issue could have happened.
But the previous way of generating password was definitely more convenient.
If there are no (security?) reasons to go back to the old scheme, we probably should consider that.
