Thanks! For QEMU, 1.83 in 24.04 is essentially what's blocking enabling
Rust by default. Unfortunately 1.82 really isn't enough due to the "refs
to static in const" feature.

It would be great to have any newer version than 1.82 as an SRU in the
second half of 2025.

Title:
rustc is not getting new versions in Ubuntu 24.04

Status in rustc package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Both Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 have rustc 1.75, with additional versions
up to 1.80 in packages like rustc-1.77. However Rust 1.81 is not
available from the official repository of any LTS version (only
  oracular and newer).

Rust 1.80 was released in July 2024, not long after 24.04 itself was
released. I would have naively expected additional packages in 24.04
to go on until July 2026, but that doesn't seem to be the case. QEMU
is planning to introduce Rust (with a target of supporting Rust 1.83
and newer); it would be a regression if it is not possible to build
even on the latest Ubuntu LTS release.

Is it planned to update the base rustc (plus rust libstd etc.) package
in 24.04 or alternatively to upload alternative Rust packages for
versions newer than 1.80? This situation where one LTS release got new
versions of the language multiple times over two years, and the other
basically never had any update, is confusing.

(I have already asked at askubuntu.com but got no answer).
