I also used minimal install in past, up to 20.04 there was netinstall that was very good and really minimal for many use and/or from where start, recently preparing new minimal install for Ubuntu 24.04 installations replacing Ubuntu 20.04 I found many issue.
mini.iso it's terrible and useless because it requires too many resources and simply downloading and using the major installers.
For a minimal installation you get closer with an ubuntu server installation, but for some very minimal cases a manual installation from deboostrap would be needed to get something better.
The new Ubuntu server installation has unfortunately also become very limited in terms of languages ​​and options.

Regarding the desktop part I have also been using cinnamon for many
years but using metapackages from Debian, in some cases I have also done
some tests on Ubuntu to get around problems due to various packages with
strange changes specific to Ubuntu that force the addition of useless or
problematic gnome components but unfortunately I didn't have time before
the Ubuntu 24.04 freeze and so I did the fixes for Ubuntu later.

I haven't thoroughly tested the more minimal installations but maybe using cinnamon-core it might be decent, if you also want to try it.

I wanted to try contributing to Ubuntu cinnamon but the new installer and current metapackages seem a bit chaotic and it would take too much time which I don't have, I already used too much of it just for tests last weekends.
Anyway at least they did some cleaning for the next version and I hope that by the next lts they will be able to do better.
