(To get X11 connections working I could enable root login over ssh, add
my public key and then ssh -l root, but the upgrade is already running
so I don't like interrupting that, and I started reporting this when I
thought it was only one or two packages that triggered this... )

Title:
No fallback if X11 connection fails.
Status in ubuntu-release-upgrader package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
I'm currently upgrading from I think 24.04 to 25.04. The machine is
not my normal workstation it is located 10m from here so I started the
upgrade from my normal workstation so I could continue to work.
Anyway, I saw a bunch of "cannot connect to X server because of wrong
authentication". I suspect it wanted to ask me something, but then
couldn't and it didn't do a fallback to terminal mode. That makes me
worry: what did it do that it thought important enough to try to ask
me?
Below are some of the packages that triggered this. Hopefully the long
list makes it easier to spot the commonality between these.
