[Bug 2124208] [NEW] date: invalid date 'now - 162.96 seconds' on login to live TTY

whilst investigating why the live session did not appear in virtualbox
when 3D host graphics is chosen (static blackcursor), I switched to a
TTY and logged in.

Saw immediately to messages - as per the title and a run-parts update-
motd.d exit warning.

typing date correctly displayed todays date.
