The box is normally headless (but it just sits in a corner of my home

That is right about when I started the upgrade, so something must have
terminated it.  Maybe the postinst of some package?

  Sshd died during 24.04 to 26.04 upgrade

Status in ubuntu-release-upgrader package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  I did a do-release-upgrade -d over ssh.

  Both the normal port ssh runs on as well as the backup port in case of a problem died.
  The next morning I used a console to run apt -f install / dpkg --configure -a to finish the upgrade.

  In the end I got it up and running, but I wouldn't expect sshd to die.
