Hmm that may be related to it? I would not expect dpkg-divert to affect
files already loaded however, and the deactivations of
ssh.{service, socket} shouldn't directly drop the existing connection
either.
The upgrade included a few transitions that may affect ssh like libc6,
libssl3t64, systemd, and openssl-provider-legacy (new in Resolute). I
wonder if one of these changes happened in a weird place and somehow
killed the connection, although the journalctl logs do not seem to
suggest any explicit errors.
I'm unable to directly reproduce this, but it's too early to say whether
more users may be affected by the problem.
I noticed that the screen log last showed a prompt. Were you able to
input anything or was the upgrade left to run by itself?

Title:
Sshd died during 24.04 to 26.04 upgrade
Status in ubuntu-release-upgrader package in Ubuntu:
Triaged
Bug description:
I did a do-release-upgrade -d over ssh.
Both the normal port ssh runs on as well as the backup port in case of a problem died.
The next morning I used a console to run apt -f install / dpkg --configure -a to finish the upgrade.
In the end I got it up and running, but I wouldn't expect sshd to die.
