I went down a bit of a rabbit hole trying to get things working on my
16" model. I started with the
Ubuntu_Desktop_24.04_x1e001dev_ssh_6.12.img.xz file from jglathe's
Google Drive. Wrote it to my USB SSD. I chroot'd in and built the 6.17
kernel and deb packages from irtix' repo. I installed the packages via
dpkg and then ran into issues with generating the initial ram fs. Turns
out the initramfs hooks really don't like the emulated aarch64
environment. I kept getting errors that prevented me from generating the
initramfs from the btrfs, fsck, and udev hooks, so I tried removing the
hooks and seeing if I could boot with the new kernel, dtb, and modules
installed and no hooks.
On boot I got to a big purple Kernel panic because the init I created
didn't have proper scripts to swap from the initfs to the real rootfs.
So instead I tried to rebuild a new init using the 6.12 initrd included
with the image as a base with all the modules from the 6.17 initrd added
in. I tried booting with the new franken-initrd and landed on a black
screen. Presumably this happens after the root fs is mounted as I'm not
dropped into a BusyBox shell. I tried plugging in an external monitor
via the HDMI port, but there doesn't seem to be any output to it either.
Not quite sure what to try from here.
Thanks,
Patrick W.

Title:
[X1E] Galaxy Book 4 Edge Support
Status in ubuntu-concept:
Confirmed
Bug description:
== Device Information ==
IdentifyingNumber : 6T619FFX700282M
Name : Galaxy Book4 Edge
Vendor : SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD.
Version : 2.1
Caption : Computer System Product
== Kernel Support ==
Not booting, awaiting test feedback for latest change
Original:
With the release of the ISO image, there appears to be initial support
for running Ubuntu on devices with the Snapdragon X Elite ARM64 chips.
I own a Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Edge with a X1E84100 CPU, and I would
love to get Ubuntu on this device. I cannot offer much in way of code
contribution but I am willing to perform any testing necessary to
progress towards getting Ubuntu running on it.
As a proactive measure, I created a bootable USB with the Ubuntu
Concept ISO image written to it. I was able to reach a Grub menu and
used the "Try or install" option on grub. Afterwards, I reached a
blank black screen for around 30-45 seconds before my laptop rebooted.
I can provide media if that would help convey the behavior. Lastly, if
there is any additional information I can provide related to this
device I'm more than happy to oblige.
Thanks,
Patrick W.
