Thanks for your prompt response.

I could not update my Ubuntu before because of the reported error.
Following your advice, I have since poked around & discovered that the
error was caused by several outdated repositories enabled under 'Other
Software' in Ubuntu's 'Software & Updates' settings.  I have now
disabled them and can update my Ubuntu to the latest release.
