Please revisit this "won't fix" decision. The build-essential package is
required by many end user packages like libdvd-pkg, dkms etc, so this is
not just when building from source. There are still many critical bugs
in uutils (like https://github.com/uutils/coreutils/issues/11469 that I
found about today) which makes it untenable to use it in many
deployments, while other users unaware of such issues may get hit by
such open issues breaking the system in unpredictable ways.

Title:
Make coreutils-from-gnu a possible dependency for build-essential
Status in build-essential package in Ubuntu:
Won't Fix
Status in coreutils-from package in Ubuntu:
Won't Fix
Bug description:
It's very handy to install build-essential meta package on dev
systems, but it seems to have a hard dependency on coreutils-from-
uutils. When I replaced it by coreutils-from-gnu by running:
sudo apt install coreutils-from-gnu coreutils-from-uutils- --allow-
remove-essential
It ended up removing build-essential meta package from my system.
It would be useful to have a virtual package for coreutils that accept
any of the available flavors and make users' lives easier to replace
one by another.
