Thank you @vanvugt ! I got my desktop icons and dock back in their same
relative positions as before my upgrade. This was after re-installing
gnome-shell-ubuntu-extensions per your recommendation and also re-
booting.

Bug description:
[ Impact ]
On upgrade to 26.04, the default Ubuntu Desktop gnome-shell extensions
are not installed if the `ubuntu-desktop-minimal` metapackage was not
present on the upgrading system.
This manifests with missing desktop icons, enhanced tiling, and app-
indicators, as well as with an empty Settings > Ubuntu Desktop page.
The proposed solution is to add a dependency on `gnome-shell-ubuntnu-
extensions` from the `ubuntu-session` package, which is the binary
package providing the means to log-in to the Ubuntu desktop session.
Previously instead, there was only a dependency on the extensions
package from the ubuntu-desktop{,-minimal} metapackages.
[ Test Plan ]
1. Set up a 24.04 or 25.10 Ubuntu Desktop install
2. Remove the ubuntu-desktop and ubuntu-desktop-minimal metapackages
-> this should mark all direct dependants as manually installed, rather than
removing them as unused
3. Upgrade to 26.04
4. Verify that desktop icons, enhanced tiling and app-indicators are available
5. Verify that Settings > Ubuntu Desktop is available
[ Where problems could occur ]
Removing gnome-shell-ubuntu-extensions will now require removing the
ubuntu-session package as well. This is intended: if the user wants to
use gnome without the ubuntu extensions they can use the `gnome-
session` package instead (or disable the extensions instead of
uninstalling them)
