As agreed, I'm sending this back to hand it off at my end of day.
I did not make much progress over Benji's code, just some cleanup.
I added the integration tests code from his pastebin as commented code to
the bottom of test/test_environment_view.js .
The unit tests are not passing, they stop with an error at test #90 in
the mentioned file, the isGuiService utility filter is getting the wrong
object.
