Juju relations - where's my data?

I've seen several threads recently that involved one uncertainty or another about how relation data is passed around (from a data-model perspective). To be honest, I'd never felt completely confident on the topic myself, so I spent some time experimenting.

I've been wanting to do more writing recently, so I turned this into a blog post describing the incorrect conceptual models I'd used previously, along with the actual model that Juju uses[1].
