Sadly it appears as though this is a case where it is still broken. I have just
tried today's Hoary snapshot (2005-04-04, AMD64), and done a dmesg. The
installer still will not recognize the CD and the symptoms look quite similar to
other reports of this issue. The following is what dmesg shows right after the
USB hub/ports are detected:

Wow, there is even a segfault in there :/ ... anyway, I suppose that I could try
what one forum post suggested and use something else (like Knoppix perhaps) to
create a partition with a copy of the CD and then mount that as /cdrom and then
try to fix things after the install, but that is a bit of a pita. If you have
any other suggestions for me or need more information then please let me know!
